FAQ: Frequently Asked Questions

Accounts

  • How do I change my password?
We have a handy page for changing your password.
  • I lost my password, what do I do?
If you have lost your password, send an e-mail to Miles and he will reset your password.
  • I keep putting in my password, but it's not working! Argh!
Uh-oh, I have some bad news for you: it's not that simple. You may be typing in the wrong user name. Check out our page on Passwords, the user name will be a little bit different depending on what you're using it for. If that doesn't work, contact Miles and he will reset your password.
  • I'm trying to access my account with SSH or SFTP and it's not working, it says my user doesn't exist.
We don't give just anyone a shell account, it can be a big security risk and most people don't need them anyway. If you really, really need one, talk to us about it. We can either cave in and give you one or provide you with another solution that's just as good.
  • "Reset my password", what does that mean?
We will set your password to something new, but probably something difficult to remember like "112hdh8373ik". You can then take this new password and use it to page for change your password to something you can remember.

E-Mail

  • I'm trying to send a big file with e-mail and it won't send. It keeps complaining about the message being too big.
Sending large files over e-mail is bad idea, it's also pretty slow and most mail servers won't accept anything big anyway. Our limit is 10MB, any e-mail large than that won't be accepted for delivery. But don't despair! We have a service to meet exactly this need. Log into Mail Truck and send your file that way. It's just as safe and secure as e-mail and it will be much faster.

Web DAV

  • I'm uploading some big files (like video or pictures that look nice when printed, or maybe some big PDF files) and it is taking forever. Is it broken?
Web DAV is good at some things and not so good at others. Factor in that different operating systems and programs deal with Web DAV differently, and the situation can get real confusing really fast. The rule of thumb is to use Web DAV when editing content on your website, but use FTP to upload big stuff like video or documents.
  • I had Miles put in some Symbolic Links in my web space, but I don't see them. Are they gone?
Web DAV doesn't show you any Symbolic Links, but you can see them with FTP if you need to get at them.

FTP

  • I'm trying to connect to my site with FTP and it's not working, it says my user name and password combination are wrong.
First thing, make sure you're using the correct port. We have some more information on this on our FTP page. If that doesn't work, you may need to have us reset your password.

Chat (Jabber)

  • I use iChat on Mac OS X to connect to the Jabber server and I keep getting an SSL error.
iChat doesn't support STARTTLS connections, you have to connect to port 5223 (iChat's default is 5222). iChat will warn you that the connection is insecure, but it will still connect over SSL.
