Setting Up Outlook Express
Outlook Express is a capable e-mail client and it comes bundled with Internet Explorer (which comes bundled with Windows XP). These instructions are for Outlook Express version 6.00.29002.2180. If you have a different version of Outlook Express these screenshots may be a little different but these differences should be minor.
You may want to print these instructions out so that you can refer to them while you setup your new account. It is important to complete all of the steps spelled out below to get the most from your new e-mail.
Setup Your Account
Launch Outlook Express and then select "Accounts" from under the "Tools" menu.
Select the "Mail" tab and then click on the "Add" button on the right-hand side. In an odd interface twist, the "Add" button actually reveals a menu, select "Mail..." from that menu.
The poorly named Internet Connection Wizard will open up and ask you for your name. Fill in your proper name in the "Display Name" field. Press "Next" to move to the next step.
The wizard will ask you for your e-mail address, type it into the "E-mail address" field. Press "Next" to move to the next step.
The wizard will collect some details about your account. Look to the first line of this form, wher it reads "My incoming mail server is a..." change the pull-down to read "IMAP".
In the "Incoming mail (POP3, IMAP or HTTP) server" field, type in "secure.escapecs.com".
In the "Outgoing mail (SMTP) server" field, type in "secure.escapecs.com". Press "Next" to move to the next step.
The wizard will prompt you for your account information. Your user name on the mail server is usually set to match your e-mail account. Type your user name (including the @ sign and the domain name) into the "Account Name" field.
Type your password into the "Password" field and check the "Remember password" field. Press the "Next" button to move onto the next step.
The wizard will let you know that you've completed all of the steps. Press "Finish" to complete setting up the account.
Outlook Express will ask you if you want to download the folders from the server. These are the names of the folders currently setup for your account, press "Yes" to download the names of these folders.
Outlook Express will display the list of downloaded folders for your inspection. They are what they are and they may differ from this image. Press the "OK" button to dismiss this window.
Secure Your Mail
You're now setup to read mail, however, at this point your communication with the mail server is not secure. To secure this communication select "Accounts" from under the "Tools" menu.
First off, change the name of the account. Outlook Express picks one for you, but it's the name of the mail server. Type a more sensible name for your account like "Work" or "My E-Mail" into the first field of the form.
Select the "Servers" tab. Check the checkbox at the bottom of the window that reads "My server requires authentication."
Select the "Advanced" tab. Set the "Outgoing mail (SMTP)" field to "465". Check the checkbox below that field that reads "This server requires a secure connection (SSL)".
Set the "Incoming Mail (IMAP)" field to 993. Check the checkbox below that field that reads "This server requires a secure connection (SSL)". Press the "OK" button to dismiss this window.
Outlook Express will want to download your folder names again. Press "Yes" to download the folder list again.
Whew, that's it! You've successfully configured Outlook Express to use your new account and you've taken some steps to ensure that your communication with the e-mail server is secure. Treat yourself to something special, I reccommend a Snickers bar. It was a non-trivial task and the steps were many, you deserve it!
